About Around the World on a Bicycle

In 1884, the 29 year old Thomas Stevens set out from San Fransisco on the 'modern mechanical invention' of the Penny Farthing. His aim was to circumnavigate the globe on his 'big wheel'.

Thomas Stevens wrote about his journey and it was published as a book "Around the World on a Bicycle" in 1888. The book is available via Project Gutenberg (Vol I and II) and those copies form the basis of the text used on this blog. The text of the Project Gutenberg version has been tidied up and paragraphs have been split at appropriate points in the text by time and date. Links have been added to some parts of the text to add context. Unfortunately, as with all web links, these will probably become less helpful over time as other sites move their content around.

I am adding images from the original book courtesy of the British Library. I am manually identifying places mentioned and am adding maps to the blog posts using Leaflet.js/OpenStreetMap.

As this is a spare time project, it is not yet finished and it will update as and when I have time to do it.
